Bye Bye Dark Spots!

Bye Bye Dark Spots!

Dark spots on the face can result from hyperpigmentation which is a common skin condition that occurs when the skin produces too much melanin.

Hyperpigmentation can be caused by sun exposure, scars, ageing, etc.

Why do I have dark spots on my face?

Dark spots can occur if the skin overproduces melanin. Melanin is the pigment that will give the color to your dark spots. This also called “hyperpigmentation”

Hyperpigmentation can develop as a result of :

  • Ageing
  • Hormonal changes, such as during pregnancy or menopause
  • Exposure to the sun

Skin lesions can also cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

 These lesions include :

  • Acne
  • Bites, cuts and burns
  • Excessive or incorrect hair removal techniques
  • Ingrown hairs
  • Hard skin care products
  • Scars from psoriasis or other skin conditions

What ingredients are good for me ?

  • Niacinamide

Niacinamide, also known as Vitamin B3, helps reduce the transfer of pigment from melanocytes to surrounding keratinocytes, which can reduce the appearance of uneven pigmentation and dark spots.

  • Retinoids

Retinoids are derivatives of vitamin A. They increase the turnover of new skin cells, which can fade dark spots over time.

  • Chemical exfoliants

Chemical exfoliants are acids that dissolve the top layer of skin cells. They include alpha hydroxy acids, such as lactic acid, and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), such as salicylic acid.

  • Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate

Well known as Vitamin C, it is a powerful ingredient to address hyperpigmentation and dark spots, as it is highly effective at scavenging free radicals, helping the skin defend itself against future oxidative stress, and brightening skin.

Tips to Prevent Dark Spots

  • Wear Sunscreen Often

If you limit your sun exposure altogether, you won’t have dark spots to begin with.

  • Gently Exfoliate

Exfoliating is extremely important, especially for mature skin because the skin’s natural exfoliation process slows down. Exfoliating can help reduce and prevent dark spots by breaking up the pigmentation and helping your skin look more youthful.

  • Don’t spend too much time in the sun and heat
